Amazon to invest in regional content in India for Prime Video

Amazon will soon be launching regional content in India. The country’s thriving domestic market has been the fastest growing geography for Amazon Prime and Prime Video. The company is now working on 30 originals in multiple regional languages to attract more consumers.

Amazon Prime Video, the video streaming service by the e-commerce giant has become quite popular among Indian viewers. Currently Prime Video has content in 5 regional languages including Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Hindi, and Marathi. Amazon is exploring new ideas to expand into other vernacular languages.

The platform has added a number of movie titles in vernacular languages in the last year. On Karnataka Rajyotsava (Karnataka Day), the company announced addition of Kannada movies to its library. From November 1st, Prime Members were given access to popular Kannada movies from recent years.

Vijay Subramaniam, director and head of content at Amazon Prime Video India explains the company’s plan to increase the regional language offerings. The platform announced its first vernacular original series - GangStars in Telugu this year. Amazon will now launch the second web series in Tamil by end of this year.

By next year, Prime Video will roll out 10 original series including in different genres such as reality and fiction. The platform will come up with 12 new shows in 2020. In November, the company announced the launch of a new show featuring actress Shilpa Shetty.
