Taiwanese smartphone giant HTC too is set to join the smartwatch bandwagon. According to a report in Bloomberg, the company is working on a smartwatch powered by Google's Android operating system.

The smartwatch with in-built camera will be able to take pictures as well. The Bloomberg report cites an unidentified source said to be familiar with the matter.

Although HTC has so far not commented on the Bloomberg report, HTC CEO Peter Chou recently hinted at the company's interest in entering the wearable computing market. Chou was quoted by Financial Times as saying that the wearable technology market is "a critical segment for us".

The race for wearable devicessmartwatches is heating up among technology companies with almost every tech giant speculated to be working on its own version.

Samsung launched its Galaxy Gear smartwatch at the IFA event earlier this year. Qualcomm too launched its Toq smartwatch at the same event.

Apple is also reportedly working on a smartwatch, likely with a curved display. Sony and Pebble are the two other big manufacturers of smartwatches. There are also reports that Internet giant Google may unveil its smartwatch along with Nexus 5 smartphone and Android 4.4 (KitKat) operating system at its forthcoming event slated for end of this month.

Sports apparel giant Addidas too announced at a tech event recently that the company is joining the smartwatch race with a new piece of hardware.

HTC posted its first quarterly loss earlier this month. Once ranked among the top five phonemakers by shipments, HTC this year fell out of the top 10, according to Gartner.
