BENGALURU: The landscape for internships witnessed a major transformation with more than 31,000 companies hired interns in 2016, compared with 500-odd companies in 2013, finds data by internship and training platform Internshala.
According to data from the platform’s user base culled over the last six years, the areas in which internships saw the highest traction included programming, digital marketing, design, analytics, and sales and marketing.
“The exponential rise in the number of internships had been largely driven by the startup revolution and the setting-up of so many new-age companies, who find that interns are an excellent way to validate their ideas and build their teams in a cost-effective manner. Students are recognising that internships can be a tool to shape their careers and are opting for multiple internships to gain experience during their college years,” Sarvesh Agrawal, founder of the Gurgaon-based platform, told ET.
Internships are also being preferred by those with a few years of work experience and want to try a career shift, and by women on a career break looking to come back to work, said Agrawal. The top sectors that hire interns include e-commerce, media and entertainment, banking and financial services, academic institutions, FMCG and engineering.
“Work-from-home, too, is emerging as a strong trend with many interns opting for categories like web development, content writing, digital marketing and accounting for 97, 72, and 69 applications on an average,” said Agrawal.
Average stipends range from Rs 10,000-15,000 for in-office roles and Rs 3,000-5,000 for work-from-home roles.
