Can cellphone radiations cause cancer?
13-Mar-2018

You must have overheard that using a smartphone can cause cancer. The increased use of cell phones has led to people worrying about the effects of phone’s radiations.

We keep our phones right next to our brains all the time. We all know that cellphones cause radiation. However, phone radiation is not like the radiation from a nuclear meltdown. That kind of radiation is known as “ionizing radiation”. Which is high energy and can damage human DNA. The effects of ionizing radiation can lead to cancer.

Cellular phones emit a much lower energy radiation, which is even lower than visible light. The radiation from cell phones is considered as “non-ionizing” tradition. It is scientifically proven that non-ionizing radiation cannot damage DNA. However, it can still react with the body and may lead to problems from long-term exposure.

World Health Organization (WHO) had said in 2011 that phone radiation is possibly carcinogenic. Jonathan Samet, the dean of Colorado School of Public Health and phone radiation expert was leading the research conducted by WHO in 2011. Six years later, Samet has clarified that there is no evidence but phone radiation remains to have some indication of risk.

He said, “I’m not saying there’s a public health crisis by any means. But I’m saying here’s a very widespread exposure in our society and we should make sure we understand it.” Following Samet’s clarification, FDA conducted experiments on rats and mice to check the effects of high-level beams of phone radiation.

FDA said, “Taken together, all of this research ... [has] given us the confidence that the current safety limits for cell phone radiation remain acceptable for protecting the public health.” Until the researchers find any solid evidence of phone radiation leading to cancer, it is safe to assume that using cellular phones is less likely to lead to cancer than eating red meat.
