Facebook is on a mission of banning malicious apps and user accounts. The company has banned over 583 million fake accounts in the first three months of 2018.
In an official statement on Tuesday, Facebook said that the company has banned 583 million fake accounts as they did not meet the community standards. Facebook wants to enforce its community standards against sexual content, violence, terrorism propaganda or hate speech. The move comes after the company revised its privacy policy followed by Cambridge Analytica scandal.
The social media company said that there are millions of attempts to create fake accounts every day. So far the company has been successful in blocking most of these attempts. Despitethese efforts, over 3-4% of total Facebook profiles. The company has built a technology that detects almost 100% of spam content.
Facebook’s team has slapped warnings on nearly 30 million posts that contain sexual or violent images, terrorist propaganda or hate speech. Facebook has developed an AI-powered technology to detect such content. So far over 3.4 million posts that contained graphic violence has been detected by the AI technology that filters the content.
According to the company, the number of posts that contained graphic violence this year is three times more than what it was in the last quarter of 2017. In almost 85.6% of cases, Facebook detects these images way before being alerted to them by users. Facebook users are quite active in flagging the content that contains violence.
The total posts the contained graphic violence is approximately 0.27% of total content viewed by Facebook users. The report said, “In other words, of every 10,000 content views, an estimate of 22 to 27 contained graphic violence. It may take a human to understand and accurately interpret nuances like... self-referential comments or sarcasm. We aim to protect and respect both expression and personal safety.”
Facebook has been under a radar for the kind of content that is circulated on the platform. Monika Bicket, Facebook’s head of global policy management assured that the company plans to recruit 3,000 more staff members in addition to existing 4,000 employees that take care of content filtering.
