Outcome-based learning will ensure IT jobs, says Udacity COO
05-Jun-2018

Indian IT workers can boost their career by applying outcome-based learning methods, replacing traditional rote-based learning. Udacity’s COO believes that Indian talent has a long way to go, provided that they improvise the learning methods.

Clarissa Shen, the COO of online learning platform, Udacity has worked with companiesGoogle, Flipkart, and Tata Group to train their workforce. The learning philosophy used at Udacity is based on industry standards, the firm has curatedcourses to meet the needs of an employee working in a specific industrial field.

Udacity had experimented with a new concept called ‘interview-less hiring’ with Flipkart. The developers with Udacity certified technical training are not put through a rigorous technical review during an interview. The studies have shown that engineers that study engineers that learn Udacity course are almost-industry ready.

Shen said, “It is only possible if education is democratized and offers outcome-based learning. This is what the industry wantsover the world. Why do I say this? When we went back to Flipkart a year later and checked up on the performance of our students, the folks in the e-commerce company tell us that these employees – our students – were the top five performers in the company.”

Digital platforms and learning tools have almost democratized the education. There are more opportunities on digital platforms than ever before. People have full proofed themselves with the new tech. Udacity is also offering a nano-engineering course for self-driving car technology. The company has built its own self-driving car, which is being tested in the Mountain View, California.

In an interview with YourStory, Clarissa Shen talks about the potential of AI and its impact on human jobs. She recommends that people must reskill themselves to stay ready for the future jobs. The technology itself will not take away the jobs but it will replace them with more challenging roles, which will demand maximum outcome the IT workers.
