There is a massive increase in students opting for Computer Science courses at IIT-Bombay. The top 100 JEE (Advance) rank holders have opted for IIT Bombay, Madras and Delhi this year, most of them are enrolling for the computer science course.
The government has created a supernumerary quota of 14% of girls in the premier technical institutions this year. Even the female students have followed a similar choice pattern during the first round of allotment. Out of top 100 rank holders, around 60 have opted for various courses at IIT-Bombay just like 2017.
A large number of top 100 JEE rank holders including the all-India topper and the girl topper (AIR 6) have opted for computer science. The admissions at IIT Bombay, which has 59 seats for computer science closed the admissions at AIR 59 for general category. For girls admissions were closed at AIR 173. A very few of the top 100 rank holders chose electrical engineering and engineering physics. A student with AIR 43 rank picked electrical engineering at IIT Bombay.
Even at IIT Delhi, computer science was the top choice among students. All India rank 3 holders enrolled for the computer science engineering at IIT Delhi. Computer science admissions for the general category were closed at AIR 100. Even a large number of IIT Madras students opted for the computer science course. The admissions opened at AIR 51 and closed at AIR 200.
IIT Kharagpur, the alma mater of Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai also attracted a large number of top rank holders enrolling for computer science. IIT Kanpur opened admissions for computer science course at AIR 103. IIT Hyderabad was also the hot pick among students, CSE admissions opened at AIR 445.
All the IITs, NITs and IIITs have put out a separate list for girls that opted for the supernumerary quota. Those that did not opt for the quota were named in the gender-neutral lists for every category. JEE Chairman said, “While many girl toppers could have opted for the gender-neutral category first, they have chosen a seat in the girls only list. We have a set hierarchy that we have followed, but if a candidate opted for the females only category first, it is their choice.”
